Over-prepare, then go with the flow! None of us at Synthesis can do less than our best when it comes to our clients. Each of us loves the feeling of confidence that results from being prepared: going into a meeting with our ducks in a row, presenting a webinar that is rehearsed and balanced, turning in a finished product knowing we put our best foot forward.
It’s that second part of the equation that is a bit tougher – going with the flow. Losing both our parents this past year within 16 days of each other has taught Gary and me a simple lesson: no matter how prepared you might be, some things are completely out of your control. That’s when the real choice occurs: resist what happens next or lean into it.
We’re choosing to lean into life this year. If you are a student of metaphysics like I am, you’ll love this: The number 12 means completion. You can find many examples of 12 being a sign of wholeness – 12 months in a year, 12 signs in the zodiac, 12 tribes of Israel, even Christ called 12 apostles. So 2012 is reminding us (me!) to consider this: when I have done all I can, relax. I may not be able to control what happens next, but I can control the first step and be as prepared as possible.
So our tips this year will be two-fold. The first tip will be about good preparation; the second, about letting go. A one-two attempt to find wholeness in 2012, erasing (or easing) some of the stress and anxiety that comes from over-attachment to the results.
Here’s our first tip to organize you workflow in 2012:
One – every hour or two – stop, close your door, go outside or simply stand by your desk and perform a sun salutation to wake up your muscles, slow your breathing and re-connect your body with your mind. This one move alone - that takes less than 5 minutes - will re-energize you completely, helping you continue working with less frustration and stress. There are many free videos of classic sun salutations. Click here for one.
Two – take a good look at your database or your spreadsheet of contacts. If they haven’t responded to your emails, letters, calls for appointments even once during 2011, odds are good nothing will change this year. Oh sure, there are always one or two exceptions to this rule. But I encourage you to delete, let go, forget those folks who have not responded to your efforts in years past and instead, focus on filing that vacuum with fresh, invigorated leads. Even though it costs nothing to send an advertorial email, you are, in a sense, casting ‘pearls before swine’. A huge database doesn’t make you richer; time to refuel your pipeline with true prospects.
We wish you the very best in 2012. May it be complete with good health, peace and prosperity for all.
